Tutorial, as promised :)

Hi everybody,

As promised, here's a quick tutorial of the technique I prefer to use for quick concept art:

That's a amazingly detailed tutorial Drone! I may be more of a character artist but this makes me want to try my hand at some spaceships/vehicles. I've been meaning to do some new Gungan subs for a while now.
Cheers! :D

Eclipse

I'm so trying this on my next couple requests. Gotta finish my current one first though.

Oh my goodness... that is the most amazing thing I have ever seen!!! I can't believe you did that in photoshop! It looks real!

Thanks for this great insight! Will see if I'm giving it a try some time, it doesn't look that uber hard; apart from the beginning, which needs me have hand drawing skills, which I don't have. :P

Drone

I'm glad you find this useful guys :)

Tomorrow if I have some time -- and if you're interested -- I can post a few remarks on the general subject of Concept Art when it comes to Industrial/vehicle design.

In the mean time, if someone tries this method, and has questyions, please just drop a line :)

Wow, that's crazy - so structured. This seems more like the rendering process of a 3d program than painting :P When I draw something, I just... draw it.

Indeed, following fixed, certain steps sometimes makes you feel that you are doing somethig routine, and not quite artwork.

Then again, when you work in the industry, and you have to produce artwork within given deadlines and with high quality, you don't have a choice -- you do have to come up with something that people traditionally call "technique". Any artist how draws for a living has one, you can recognize it from his/her works -- you can even recognize the artists by the technique. So, here, I've shared my technique for rendering non-organic objects :)

CucumberBoy

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm not in the business, so I wouldn't know. What's your line of work then? Graphic designer, obviously :P But where? And have you taken any art classes? I know for a fact that a lot of jobs require a bachelor's degree in arts, which is hard to get before finishing high school :/

Doubtlessely your techique work. Your stuff is awesome. And I guess I have some sort of routine as well - just not as complicated and not as many layer effects :D

Oh man, if I tell you what I do and what I've studied, you ain't gonna believe it :D

I worked as an Artist (2D and 3D), later as a Lead Artist, in the Games Industry. Busy as hell, and just as stressful :)

Art-wise, I am entirely self-taught. My education has nothing to do with Art -- I've got BA's in Political Science and History, an almost completed MA in English Literature, and an almost completed PhD in Foreign Affairs/International Relations :) However, for a very long time, I wanted to make games, and in the end, nothing could stop me from pursuing this. There is nothing you can't do if you put your mind on it. By all means, if you have Art Education, it helps termendously, so I recommend it highly. I've learned it all the hardest way possible, and while extremely satisfying, it is really unnecessary if you can go through the normal steps.

Have a nice day,

Drone, you mentioned in the tutorial that you created special brushes for the scratches made on hull and paintjob, but to be honest as a Photshop newb even though I do know how to make them I can't reverse engineer them. Could you perhaps drop a few hints?
